Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race

This 11th annual event takes place in Prince Albert on February 12 and finishes on Sunday February 17, 2008 in La Ronge. Competitors choose from a 12-dog or eight-dog team, travelling 535km (300miles) and over 360km (200miles) respectively. They will get as far north as Stanley Mission and then even further to La Ronge. The 12-dog race pulls a bit more punch, as it is also the qualifying event for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest races. The grand finale takes place in La Ronge with an awards breakfast and much cheering.

Pipon (Winter) Festival

From January 26 and 27, 2008, head over to the Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatoon for the second annual Pipon (Winter) Festival. Fun for the whole family includes dance shows, sled dog demonstrations and sleigh rides, a chance to snowshoe and make crafts, and baking, wiener roasting and hot chocolate. On both days the gates open at 10:00am and welcome visitors until 5:00pm. Kids under five are free while everyone else only pays $2 CDN. For more information call 1-877-547-6546.

Festiv-Ale

Also in Regina at the Conexus Arts Centre is the third annual Festiv-Ale. February 1 and 2, 2008 mark the expanded festival that brings over 300 beers to try and pub food to share. They come from both small and large breweries to tantalize the taste buds of revellers. But beer isn't the only thing on order. Entertainers AcousticFrog, Crofter's Revenge, Frantic City and Whiteboy Slim will rock the night away, while the Legion Color Party Parade with Pipers will ease the evening on. Call 1-877-9AD-EASE for more info.
